Two-thirds of people planned to make financial resolutions on 1 January, according to research by credit ratings company Equifax, and almost the same number put “reducing debts” as their top priority.
Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, said: “Taking control of your finances in 2010 is obviously crucial.
“So it’s encouraging to see that nearly one in three [consumers] aim to give their finances a complete overhaul, as well as take a better planned approach to spending.”
Equifax’s research, which was conducted among 932 people in November, found that money worries weighed heavily on relationships in 2009, with 13% of people hiding debts from their partner.
Munroe advised those looking to fix their finances to check their credit report first.
He said: “After the inevitable Christmas spending spree it will be even more important for consumers to know exactly what they have to repay, so they can avoid a real New Year financial hangover and get the best credit deals going forward.”
