Top Tips

Top credit card tips...

Here are our top tips for when you’re applying for a credit card.

  • Always read the terms and conditions carefully before you apply for any credit card.
  • Applying for multiple credit cards at the same time may negatively affect your credit rating.
  • You can improve a poor credit rating by using an adverse credit card sensibly.

What are airmiles credit cards?

Using an airmiles credit card when you spend lets you build up points towards a free return flight. Your points, or airmiles, can also be used for a wide range of different things, from car hire and hotel booking to theme park tickets and racing car driving.

But there are a number of different issues that you need to take into account before choosing your airmiles credit card.

What are the benefits of an airmiles credit card?

Airmiles credit cards save you money on flights, hotels, car hire and holidays. If you’re a regular traveller then you could reap a world of benefits from the right airmiles card.

Many cards offer a bumper bonus of airmiles when you sign up or make your first purchase, which can often be enough for a free return flight in itself.

Also, if you use your card to pay for everyday purchases as well as one-off big buys, you'll be able to build up more points faster. You should set up a direct debit to make sure that you pay off your debt each month and avoid paying interest. Like all reward cards, any interest you pay will soon cancel out any money you've saved.

What else should I know about airmiles credit cards?

Airmiles are not an exact quantity; one airmile doesn’t equal an actual mile and airmiles on one credit card will not necessarily be the same as on another. It’s important to work out exactly how many points you need for a free flight before choosing your card. Read our airmiles credit card guide for more information.

You often need to spend a significant amount on your credit card before you are entitled to a free flight. Ensure you spend enough on your credit card annually to reap the benefits.

Read the terms and conditions of any card you're thinking of signing up to - some cards charge very high rates of interest if you don’t clear your debt each month while others carry an annual fee of as much as £150.

Remember to always pay off the full balance at the end of each month. If you don’t, you'll end up paying out more in interest than you've saved on your free flights.
