0% Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Ask Our Expert

If you’re experiencing difficult debts, confusing credit cards or inscrutable ISAs, then our economics expert is here to help. Why not write to OurExpert@CreditChoices.co.uk

Andy Williams is our Online Savings Expert at CreditChoices.co.uk and can assist with all monetary matters no matter how big or small, from piggy banks to re-mortgaging and beyond.

Q - Dear Andy,

Why can’t I transfer my existing balance on my Natwest Credit Card to the Tesco Clubcard Credit Card? It’s so frustrating; I could save myself so much money if they would just give me permission to switch.

Can you help?

Yours Sincerely,

Arnold, via email

Our expert says...

Hi Arnold…..

There’s a very simple reason why you’re finding yourself restricted in this way.

At face value, the cards seem unrelated. In fact, both cards are issued by the same bank, Royal Bank of Scotland (www.rbs.co.uk) (RBS). You’re not permitted to transfer balances between cards issued by the same banking group, hence your current predicament.

The principle credit card issuers in the UK are:

Barclaycard (www.barclaycard.co.uk)

RBS (www.rbs.co.uk)

HBOS (www.halifax.co.uk)

MBNA (www.mbna.co.uk)

Capital One (www.capitalone.co.uk)

It’s imperative you ascertain exactly who your credit card issuer is before embarking on a prospective transfer, it will save you both time and a potential hit on your credit rating. Each time you unsuccessfully apply for a credit card or loan, it gets logged on your credit file. In the current climate, blemishes like this could prevent you from being accepted for credit in the future.

Given your circumstances, I would recommend the Virgin Money credit card (www.uk.virginmoney.com) as the most worthy solution. I’ve based this conclusion on two key criteria:

(1) The Virgin Money credit card offers 0% on balance transfers for a highly competitive 15 months, and…..

(2) This card is issued by MBNA, so you won’t be refused on the grounds of transferring from a card in the same banking group.

Thanks for writing in, I hope this works out for you.
